Jennifer T. Ley

Jennifer Ley’s art practice spans diverse media over 40+ years. At its core is a commitment to community building and social activism. Her short films and Xerox art is now in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art. Her hypertext and web works from the late 90’s were featured in the first exhibition of electronic literature at the Library of Congress in Electronic Literature & Its Emerging Forms in 2013. She performed her digital works live at the Guggenheim and at SIGGRAPH 2000 in New Orleans.
In the early 90’s Ley founded Crayon Power, a not-for-profit environmental education organization endorsed by the United Nations Environment Program. Working with local Jersey City artists and the Rainforest Alliance, Rainforest Action Network and many other environmental, education and human’s rights organizations, Crayon Power produced nationally distributed activity journals of artist-illustrated pull out letter pages kids could color and mail to decision making adults on a wide variety of environmental topics.
Glad to be part of the creative community at Manufacturer’s Village, Ley is currently using her studio space to catalogue her early clay works featuring a fanciful parade of mythological women, made at Greenwich House Pottery and Parsons School of Design in the early 80’s, and looking forward to unpacking her collection of vintage Amiga and Apple computers and their early animation software so her 16 bit putti can fly again.

Ley is on the Art Committee at the Montclair Art Museum and runs a Facebook group for their Friends of Native American Art at MAM. She owns a 120 year old adobe casita in Santa Fe which she AirBNB’s with her husband, Kit.
