Joan Diamond’s road as a maker began with clay. For twenty years she created sculptures, mixed media jewelry, and some functional wares with various clays and firing methods. The artist now works principally in fiber, with a nod to her clay roots through stitched clay monoprints and other work. Today she draws from dyer’s and art quilter’s vocabularies using dye and expressive stitch on various fabrics. She uses the Korean Bojagi stitching technique in her more conceptually based translucent pieces. Her work has been evolving from whole art cloths to off-the-wall sculptures and installations. Her work is a personal take on matters that intrigue her: private moments, a play of shadows, political tempers, or poetry.
